1/13/2024 0 Comments Subaru coolant reservoir![]() Check the radiator cap valve opening pressure using a radiator cap tester to ensure the cap is within specification (refer to the applicable Subaru service manual). ![]() Using clean water and a brush, thoroughly clean the valve (inner and outer surface) and the valve seal surface.Manually open the negative pressure valve.Note: A used toothbrush that has been cleaned works great. There are a couple of reasons for why you would want to replace your factory coolant overflow and expansion tanks. Using clean water and a brush, thoroughly clean the cap seal surface.Note: If replacing the cap, skip to Step 2. If there is an excessive amount of debris or the sealing rubber on the cap appears to be pitted or damaged, replace the cap. If this is not done completely, remaining debris may result in a repeat issue. The important part is the thorough cleaning of the negative pressure valve. Radiator Cap Cleaning: Many caps can be successfully cleaned. The shorter coolant reservoir tank hose was used in production as shown in Chart 1.ġ. In order to correct the condition you need to clean (and test) or replace the radiator cap, clean out the reservoir tank, and slightly shorten the hose, following the below repair procedure. If this condition continues over time, there will not be enough coolant in the system to maintain proper engine temperature. This causes the radiator cap not to seal, allowing excessive amount of coolant to escape overflowing the reservoir tank. WARNING: Cancer and Reproductive Harm.If there is debris that settles to the bottom of the reservoir tank, the hose is low enough to also suck debris back into radiator. While this can work, the relocation requires longer lines that may themselves trap air if the routing is not well thought out, the final location may not be high enough to be as effective as the OEM location and it requires the additional use of fabrication tool and materials, which many of us do not have. Firewall, strut towers, and various other areas in the engine bay have been used via fabrication of brackets and other less glamorous methods. The other option is relocating the OEM tank to another location. While some have been successful in removing the ECFT, this is not the preferred method as its success is hit or miss at best. This means the tank either needs to be relocated or removed. Inspect Key Components: Antifreeze/coolant reservoir levels Engine air filtration system Serpentine belts Brake fluid level (in transparent. For guys running a rotated turbo setup, the turbo inlet and/or inlet piping interferes with the ECFT. If youre losing coolant, contact our service department to avoid engine damage. ![]() The ECFT allows the cooling system to be filled and air to escape similar to a traditional system. A failed expansion tank can cause the cooling system in your Subaru to leak antifreeze, or it can cause your engine to overheat. The overflow bottle is just a catcher and can be removed without reducing coolant circulation or engine cooling. The overflow bottle is not part of the cooling system per se, but an adjunct to. So, to address this situation, Subaru uses the ECFT. It is about the release of induced pressure after all. ![]() The turbocharged Subaru is a bit of an oddball in that the radiator filler neck is not the high point of the cooling system the turbo charger sits higher than the radiator filler neck.
